The 2013 Summer Season has officially started here at Jean’s Playhouse. Our actors are beginning to arrive each bringing with them talent that you won’t want to miss out on. Our Summer kicked off last weekend with our Adventure Improv show featuring Fran Page, Gary DuBreuil, and Joseph Freeman. If you missed it last weekend you still have the chance to go get your tickets for this weekend! It is fun, family friendly and will keep you laughing the whole way through!

True West, opening June 13 at Jean’s Playhouse, tells the story of two estranged brothers from different worlds. Finding themselves in their mother’s home in California the two set about their own business, Austin writing a love story, and Lee going out to steal a television. But gradually they begin to assume each other’s roles. True West has been described as “true theatre.” Don’t miss out on this “viciously funny” play that features Joseph Freeman as Austin, Josh Sticklon as Lee, Gary DuBreuil as Saul, and Maureen Polimeno as the Mother.

Our staff has been hard at work these fast few weeks trying to market our fantastic summer season. Any help we can get would be much appreciated. Tell your friends, your friends friends, anyone you can think of to come enjoy a night of entertainment at Jean’s Playhouse. We now have a full bar and concessions and are offering locals a discounted price. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to see Broadway quality theatre right here in the White Mountains. Check out our website for more information or call our Box Office at 603-745-2141. Our staff in the office is also available to answer any questions you may have. The phone number for the office is 603-745-6032.

Lincoln-Woodstock’s community theater group, The Playhouse Players, fresh off the success of this holiday season’s A Christmas Carol, will be performing the family-oriented comedy, You Can’t Take It With You, a favorite among community theater circles. A Christmas Carol, which was staged, costumed, lighted and performed by volunteers, was enjoyed by more than 1,250 people in the community, and this March the Playhouse Players are going to do it again!

The process of staging You Can’t Take It With You has been a roller coaster ride of brilliant comedic moments, heartbreaking turnovers in casting due to family emergencies, touching generosity from supportive community members, and a combined drive from the core cast that this play will go on and audiences will laugh until their stomachs hurt!

You Can’t Take It With You, a comedy written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, is about a family in the 1930s who has thrown societal expectations to the winds and chosen to live as they please- together with an aquarium full of snakes and a cellar full of fireworks. Grandpa Martin prefers to spend his time at circuses and commencements rather than at work, while Mother Penny types away at six different (never-completed) plays full of scandalous intrigue. Then there is Mr. DePinna, a hanger-on who came to deliver ice to the house eight years ago and never left (locals will enjoy favorite Jay Polimeno of Polimeno Realty in the role!).

One day, the youngest daughter Alice comes home to announce that a gentleman will be calling on her- her boss’ son, as a matter of fact. When Alice and Tony get engaged, nothing can spoil their bliss, expect perhaps the prospect of a meeting between Tony’s wealthy parents and Alice’s slightly insane family! Will the Sycamores pull off their ruse as a completely normal family, or will Mr. and Mrs. Kirby discover that their son is marrying into a family that plays Beethoven on a xylophone, learns ballet from an angry anti-Stalin Russian immigrant, and has never paid a day’s worth of income tax?

From Left: Tony (Brett Lucas), Mr. DePinna (Jay Polimeno), and Alice (Christa Hollingsworth).

You Can’t Take It With You will play at Jean’s Playhouse in Lincoln March 8-10 and 15-17. (Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:00p.m.) Jean’s Playhouse is located at 10 Papermill Drive in Lincoln, right behind the Price Chopper in the middle of town. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online by clicking here or at the Box Office; phone number (603) 745-2141.

TICKET SPECIAL- Patrons may purchase Buy-One-Get-One-Free tickets online on Friday, March 1 ONLY. CLICK HERE, choose your preferred date and seats, and enter coupon code “BOGO” to receive the Buy-One-Get-One-Free discount!

If the excitement that the cast of A Christmas Carol is experiencing is catching, then the entire area should be straining at the bit to come out to these performances. It is an amusing yet traditional adaptation.

We have been in rehearsals for a few weeks now and it is an amazing thing to see these characters develop as well as feel my own characters emerge. We may stumble over our lines and not know to stand or look since we are without a finished set at this point but one thing is sure, the actors are getting the feel of who they are portraying.

There is often a struggle with accents or lack of them and those are the funny moments when we go from definitely hearing cockney to what sounds like true Boston to me. And then there are the times when you pick up Maine or deep south. It is quite funny.

And then we have two Scrooges and two Marleys. I find it confusingly funny when Marley plays Scrooge. I don’t know how he does it.

The children are enjoying their parts, even Tiny Tim who has to put marbles in one shoe to keep from walking on that foot. It is great having children on the set since they celebrate birthdays – and to date we have had three. That means goodies to sustain us!

We are getting some lighting now and bits and pieces of the set are making sense to us now. Every now and then someone will have a costume fitting and come out with a wig or something which reminds us all that we will truly look different at the final product.

We are fast approaching dress rehearsals and I can’t wait…

What a productive weekend it was for the North Country Center for the Arts (NCCA) and Jean’s Playhouse! Thanks to Chief Mellet and the Woodstock Fire Department, Jean’s community theatre has plenty of supplies to build their sets for the Christmas Carol this winter.

Chief Mellet opened the doors to the old Woodstock Fire Department Saturday morning where there was an abundance of old sets and materials from the local haunted hayride. Many of Jean’s valued community theatre members gathered together Saturday morning with trucks and began to transport many of these materials over to the workshop at the newly constructed Jean’s Playhouse. The sets will be re-furbished and used in the upcoming season of the Christmas Carol!

A special thanks to Polimeno Realty and Arnolds’ Auto Center as their trucks along with many others were fundamental in the move of these large sets and materials. The cast of the Christmas Carol will range from all ages and the show will run from November 30th – December 16th each Friday and Saturday starting at 7:30PM with a Matinee on Sundays at 2:00PM. We are so very excited to present our first community theatre show at Jean’s Playhouse and look forward to many many more!

Here at the North Country Center for the Arts’ office, business is business… but NOT business as usual! This is the time of year when operations at the theater have traditionally gone into hibernation for the winter- but not this year!

The bulk of our Fall 2012 Appeal mailing left the Lincoln, NH post office last Friday. Many thanks to the ladies at the Lincoln post office; they could not have been too excited to see Cheryl and myself lugging all those sleeves to their door! I also want to say a special thank you to Betty Poirier, volunteer extraordinaire, who suffered through paper cuts, stiff shoulders and sore arms to address, stuff, sort and count more letters than anyone should in a lifetime! Check your mail box for YOUR letter, then check your wallet… then write a check! No donation is too small, and all donations are extremely appreciated! OUR DONORS HAVE KEPT US IN BUSINESS FOR 26 YEARS! Help us make it to 27!

The Playhouse Players will have their first official rehearsal for this winter’s A Christmas Carol on Saturday. In the next few weeks you will be hearing from the creative team behind A Christmas Carol, who will be sharing part of their rehearsal and tech processes on this blog. The show will run on weekends from November 30 through December 16.

In the meantime, I’d like to remind you to save the date for our annual Celebrity Dinner fundraiser: December 13. You won’t believe who might be serving your dinner…

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned!
